>JOHOR BARU: Bumiputra and Indian investors have been asked to take up the remaining two billion Amanah Saham Malaysia (ASM) units as the Chinese have already snapped up their quota of 999mil units.

“I hope the bumiputras and Indians will not let this opportunity go,” Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said in his speech yesterday when closing the Malaysia Unit Trust Week organised by Permodalan Nasional Bhd, which began on April 18.

“This clearly shows the level of understanding among the Chinese when it comes to investment and financial planning for the future.”

Muhyiddin said that an additional two billion units of Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 were open to the public from yesterday, with 51% allocated to the bumiputras and 49% to others.

He also urged parents, teachers and the media to play their part in educating the public, especially the young, to save and invest from an early age.

School subjects like Mathematics, Accounting, Economics and Additional Mathematics could also be used to get this message across to the younger generation, he said.

Later when speaking to reporters, Muhyiddin said that while the Government encouraged domestic spending to boost the economy, it wanted the people to save by investing their money in proper financial instruments such as unit trusts.

He said the additional income would come in handy for future planning.
